A New Approach for a New Era

Precision medicine, genomics, and data science are beginning to transform health care, enabling us to go beyond just treating symptoms and dedicate more time to understanding and addressing the root causes of disease at the genetic level.

With support from the CADASIL Eradication Project, The Starita lab have begun investigating Notch3, the gene associated with CADASIL.  Using their advanced technology and high throughput approaches the team is creating a detailed nucleotide by nucleotide map of how the gene variants impact Notch3 to better understand how variants lead to mild or severe disease.

The BBI & Starita Lab

Here in Seattle, the unique ecosystem of deep health sciences expertise, dogged technology innovation, and philanthropic spirit came together in 2017 to form the Brotman Baty Institute for Precision Medicine (BBI).    A collaboration between UW Medicine, Seattle Children’s, and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center,  BBI houses world-class resources that enable researchers to push medical genomics frontiers in ways never before imagined.

Dr. Lea Starita and the team at the BBI Advanced Technology lab have continued to develop the technology required to understand genetic variation down to the single nucleotide level.  They have already applied their techniques to gain insight into cancer risk from variation in BRCA1, and understanding of drug metabolism by studying variation in TPMT.
